2009 US Open King Mackeral Tournament in Southport is October 1-3!

utopia_vtopThirty years ago a small group of community leaders met and decided that they needed an event to showcase the great fall fishing Southport-Oak Island area has to offer. The prize money for the first tournament was guaranteed by those community leaders signing a promissory note at a local financial institution – thus the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament was born. The U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament now attracts almost 500 boats annually and is held in high esteem by the community and anglers. An all CASH GUARANTEED prize structure adds to the enjoyment of the event. The tournament guarantees its entire prize structure; it is not based on the number of boats that participate. The tournament pays 55 places in its primary prize category including $25,000 for the largest king mackerel. Additional cash prizes are added to the event by sponsors.

Upcoming Book Signings at Mayberry Days

Picture1

This year marks the 20th Anniversary of Mayberry Days, the annual pilgrimage for all Andy Griffith Show fans to the town that started it all, Mount Airy, NC.

I go to Mount Airy often since I am fortunate enough to live about 25 minutes away. I see all walks of life walking around downtown…all of them excited to have found Mayberry. It can be 30 degrees and raining and there will still be a good sized group walking down Main Street and standing in line for a pork chop sandwich at Snappy’s. I love to see all the young kids wearing Mayberry t-shirts.

If you’re in town for Mayberry Days come by and say hey. I’ll be with my good friends, Debbie and Darrel Miles at Mayberry on Main on Friday…and I’ll be in the parade Saturday morning, then at The Surry Arts Council for the rest of the day. myairy809 010

Liberty To Benefit From NC Small Town Main Street Program

Picture1

Liberty is one of the towns I included in “In Search of Mayberry.” I found the town by taking an exit off Highway 220 and driving until I found something. While the town was in a pretty good state back then it has since been facing of the same things other small towns are facing with the huge economic downturn.

The good news: Liberty has been chosen as one of six towns for 2009’s NC Small Town Main Street Program.

More about this fantastic program:

The North Carolina Main Street Center promotes downtown revitalization based on economic development within the context of historic preservation, a concept developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation that has proven successful in more than a thousand smaller communities across the country. The North Carolina Main Street program helps small towns to recognize and preserve their historic fabric, and, using local resources, build on their unique characteristics to create vibrant central business districts that meet the needs of today’s communities.

Providing technical assistance in downtown revitalization, the North Carolina Main Street Center offers two programs that work with selected towns across the state:  Main Street, which focuses on communities under 50,000 that have downtown managers, and Small Town Main Street, which provides guidance to local committees in communities under 7,500 that do not have downtown managers.

Other towns chosen for 2009 include: Robbins, La Grange, Selma, Waxhaw and Wilkesboro

The festival not only features a street fair with arts & crafts vendors but it includes continuous live musical entertainment, apple growers and their apples, children’s & youth activities, special exhibits & open houses, food, and, to top it all off, on Labor Day, the King Apple Parade.
